First Post! 02/16/2009

I have started this blog in hopes of generating interest in the upcoming reunion.  Forty years is a long time, but in some respects it seems like just yesterday that we were pitching quarters on the landing at lunchtime, attending ballgames and the dances afterwards, learning about life in Father Tracey's 'Life and Marriage' senior religion class. Yeah right!   These are just a few of many thougthts I have of my high school time.  Anyway, I am sure for each of us, our high school days have different lasting memories.  Let's all chime in with some of our favorite remembrances of days at CC.  I am looking forward to the communication.

Thanks for putting this together Kevin. I hope to be in Lafayette on July 10. I just found out yesterday that in January I will be a first time grandfather. My 35 year-old son and his wife are expecting their first.

40 years? Unbelieveable! Dave and I have been married for 39 years next month living in Fort Wayne most of the time. I have worked part time as Interior Designer @ various jobs, currently the past 9 years @ The Home Depot. Involved over the years in community volunteer positions. We've been blessed with 3 wonderful daughters and 7 beautiful grandkids ages 1-14. I have many fond memories of growing up in Lafayette, St. Marys and CC. No family left there so I never get back. It would be great to see classmates again after all of these years....

My most vivid memories from school are the pep rallies, bonfires, and dances after the games. I retired from the Army Nurse Corps after 20 years and for the past 13 years I have been teaching nursing at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Skip and I have been married 26 years and we have two wonderful daughters, Ashley and Amanda, 23 and 21. Our passion is horses. We have 7, mostly arabians. We compete in endurance riding which is anything from 50 to 100 miles in 12 to 24 hours. It keeps us "young" except when we end up on the ground which with arabians happens too frequently. Looking forward to hearing from others.

Thanks to the committee members for working so hard on the reunion. Terry Lucterhand and Julie Rasner designed the flyer and Terry's company Lafayette Printing printed it for us. Other members of the committee harassed your families for addresses! They are: Jeanne DeFouw Gernhardt, Nancy Blakesley Hannibal, Dan Klippel, Mary Ann Coughlan Lucterhand, Dave Mills and Molly Morrison Wheeler.
A big thanks to Kevin Wolford and his daughter for the web site.
I am looking forward to a big turnout. It has been fun hearing what everyone has been doing over the years.
I graduated from Ball State in Nursing (with Barb Hirschinger!) and Purdue in Education. I have worked as a nurse for over 35 years! I worked in cardiac care and education. In January, I retired from teaching nursing at Purdue.
George and I have three children, all in Lafayette. Amy and her husband have two boys, Tyler (8 years) and Cody (10 months). Jake is assistant principal at Tri County and Gretchen and her husband travel from Lafayette to Houston for their business.
Tom Arth and I got married in 2007 and had our reception in the restored Lafayette theater where I had my first date in 7th grade with his brother Dave. We live in a downtown codo behind McCord Candy. It used to be Lehnen furniture.
We spend our free time traveling and babysitting
I have so many memories of St. Mary's and CC but the best are the friendships that remain today.

I have really enjoyed working with our reunion committee!! even after living in Lafayette my whole life its hard keeping in touch with classmates--but always fun. I see some at ball games, some at their work and have good friendships with a few with whom we socialize. After graduating from Purdue Phamacy School (tim o'conner was also in my class and passed away this past year). I took over the family drugstore business with my 2 brothers dave & phil. Dave (cc68) passed away in 1994 and it wasn't so much fun without him (&lots more work) so we sold out to Osco's in 1995 and I went to work for tehm. I managed the store that used to be an Eisner grocery where doug fields and dave clark worked at Main& Kossuth sts. Osco's was merged mwith CVS in 2006 and I am working 3/4 time for them!! I was married to mary ann krabbe for 33 years until she died in 2005 -she had fought 3 cancers since age 25. We raised 4 kids who all went to st.M/St.B/CC and now have 4 grand kids> in 2006 i got a call from my 8th grade sweetheart and it was love at first date-- we got married 6/1/07 and have had a wonderful life together it has renewed and reinvigorated both of us!! we cant wait to see all our old friends in July--We hope all mwill make the effort to come back--If you haven't been in Lafayette in a while -you might ot recognize it> Downtown has lots to offer--classmate Ken Knevel who is too busy to work on the reunion was a major contributor to Lafayette railroad relocation which has revived and restored many bldgs. Cc has started a new bldg effort and is remodeling and adding space, replacing those old windows-- we can work a tour into the weekend if there is interest.. lets here from all of you we have classmates allover the states and even some in other countries. we're all interested. peace and prosperity!! tom arth

For those of us who never left it has been great reminiscing about all time both grade school and CC many of us still have a special bond. For myself I still wonder what and where many of the rest have ended up. So it’s been a lot of fun finding out.
In 1978, I married my first wife Margie and we had five children. She passed away in 1989. Three and a half years later I married Marilyn, also a widow with three children. We had a son in 1994. All except that son are pretty much on their own. We have two beautiful grandchildren. There’s never much boredom but we sure are getting tired of paying money to CC and college tuition (only 10 more school years left). I think I can retire at 80.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the reunion or hearing from you on this blog.

"Lordy, lordy, it's been FORTY!"
A big shout out to my old South Street neighbor, Barb H. who blogged above. Barb, remember the plays we had expecting a nickel domation from the neighbors for a show & koolaid, dress rehearsals in your garage? Oh, to be ten again! Another old neighbor & play buddy from the So.St. neighborhood that I hope to see is John Lammers. It's time to come back to your roots and relive some great memories and make some new ones.
A short bio today because I'd rather talk to you in person in July.
I am married to Wendel Blue (Jeff '68), we have four children: two girls, two boys, and live in Marietta, GA. I teach gifted students in an elementary school and love to travel. Last October, we rented a villa in Assisi, Italy with my sisters/brothers/spouses...magical!
Mary & Jeanne are still my best friends. All my secrets, joys and fears are still shared with them.
Hope to see you at the reunion.

Way to go, Sue. That's what I am talking about-fond memories. I too have many and when they involve Lammers they usually bring a smile to my face. I remember when the four seniors on the baseball team (Lammers and myself, Pat McCarthy and Marty Smith) would travel to out of town games. On one such occasion, we stopped for a drink at a Burger King on the way to the game. Well John ordered food and Mac, getting impatient, was already pulling out when John came running out with two burgers, fries and a chocalate milk shake. When Pat slammed on the brakes, John ran into the door and spilled the shake down the front of his uniform. Well we all were laughing hysterically but then we all knew this was a problem because Coach Eberle was a stickler for uniform appearance and would not have appreciated the fact that we had stopped for food. SO, that day the head-first slide was introduced - before the game. As soon as John got out of the car he felt he should practice the technique. Although coach didn't fully understand I think he appreciated the fact that John was willing to 'get dirty' to make himself a better player. Beautiful, just beautiful!

Kevin,
Baseball and Lammers brought another memory to me. We played Wainwright the morning after our Senior Prom. If I remember correctly, John did not go to the Prom. He hit a solo homerun and we won the game 1 - 0. I can only remember how tired we all were. My wife and I, Dannell, will be married 30 years on July 7th. We have 4 children. All did the St M, St B and CC route. Three boys and a daughter. One out of Purdue, two still going. One son married and presented us with our first grandchild on March 21st. I worked for National Homes first and along with John Glover, have been employed by Eli Lilly for over 28 years. We just sold our home in the country and are moving to Monticello and living on Lake Freeman. It is hard to believe it has been 40 years. Hope to see many classmates on July 10th. See you then.

Wonderful memories from everyone! My husband Jeff and I will celebrate 37 years in August. We have been blessed with two children. Erin (30)lives in Fort Wayne and works for a local radio station. She has given us the best granddaughter in the world, Ava (4). Colin (26) is in Indianapolis working as marketing director for Mediasauce.

I have been working in education in various capacities for the last 35 years, most of it with children who have learning disabilities. Currently I am the Coordinator for Smaller Learning Communities at Fort Wayne North Side High School.

I am tentatively slated to attend a conference in Virginia the weekend of the Reunion. If that doesn't happen, perhaps we will head to Lafayete.

Hello all!

I'm leaving this post as I will be unable to attend our 40TH (count 'em... 40!!) reunion. Thanks to all who labored in organization on this effort and I hope you have a great time!

As for/about me... proud mother of two sons, (both graduates of Wabash College and lived with Dave Mills' son there--small world, eh?), Pete age 33, in commercial real estate development in the Tampa Florida area, and Aaron, age 29, a kindergarten teacher in Indianapolis. I'm enjoying my first granddaughter, Chase Kennedy Logan, just now 18 months, but alas she lives in Florida. As for me, I've worn many hats: once worked for Al Unser Sr.'s racing team, then the planning organization for the USOC Olympic Basketball Tribute and Game against NBA All-Stars (when Bobby Knight coached... before he became Bobby "Nightmare"), then on the executive staff of the organizing committee for the 10th Pan American Games in Indy, followed by an executive position with a local investment firm before deciding to try blending self-employment with being a stay-at-home mom again. I celebrated 20 years of self-employment last year as owner of Beyond Words, a graphic design firm. Lastly, am in my 2nd elected (4-year) term to the Wayne Township Schools Board of Education here in Indy (home of Ben Davis High School and about 860 graduates this year!).

While I won't see you on the 10th, I welcome your e-mail!

So fun to "hear" from friends of a while back. It really doesn't seem like 40 years. Wes and I have been married 38 plus years, the last 28 of which have been outside of Houston. We have 3 children and one grand. Serge works for our construction company. He is married to Kim and they are the parents of our adorable one year old granddaughter, Hallie. They live in the Dallas area. Our son Shane is an attorney in Houston. Ammie lives in Sugar Land, works for Strake Jesuit College Prepatory (where the boys went to high school), and is engaged to Keith Blahuta. We are planning a May 2010 wedding. I work at B.F. Terry High School as the Title 1 parent educator. Looking forward to seeing all who can come and enjoy hearing from those who will only be with us in spirit.

I was an high school assistant principal and basketball coach for 13 years and retired in 1986 and went into private business. I retired from the beef business in 2006 and live in Florida. My wife Sheryl and I have been married for 34 years and have two children, Jeffery 28 and Keely 26. Jeffery graduated from Emory Riddle and Keely from Florida Atlantic. Jeffery is in the beef business in Las Vegas, and Keely is a recruiter for a medical company. We have no grandchildren that we know about but we do babysit my daughters dogs regularly.
I purchased my parents old house on the Tippecanoe River and spent last summer there. If anyone wants to fish or drink a beer or soda on the river bank let me know.
Look forward to seeing all.

Hi All, What fun to hear from everyone!
Forty years is a long time.
I have lived back in Lafayette the past 7 years with our kids in and out at various times. They are all on their own now. Colleen (30) Joe (29) Bridget (26) and Steve (25). The girls live in Indy and the boys in Columbus Indiana. Colleen and Ryan have given us identical twin grandsons (go Pat and Mike)and they have a little sister on the way in July. I love my job as a social worker in a helath care center. My husband Tom of 35 years is retired and never gets tired of the many sporting events he can divulge himself into.
A few of the events and pasttimes that pop into my mind about high school are:
-Fan bus rides with Bennie Loro on school buses on freezing cold nights to who knows where
-Juke box on the gym landing playing "Brown Eyed Girl"
-Driving with Kevin K. to Templeton late at night, way too fast because we were late getting home
-Rides home from school in Krabbe's "bomber"
-Group "night rides" in the fabulous vehicles of Denny Farrell, John Glover and Mike Franklin
-Junior and Senior Proms
-block section and after game Student Council dances.
-Senior Week
-School plays,ie, the "King and I" and "My Fair Lady"
-Ice skating at Columbian Park
-Algebra and Geometry classes with Mrs Johnson (character building days for many of us)
Sue and Sandy's apartment on 11th St.
It is good to hear from all of you.

It's so good to hear from everyone! It certainly seems like we all have had our share of good and bad times in our lives over the past 40 years but look how far we've come. Can you believe it? Many of you have been married to your spouses for 20 or 30 plus years and I truly admire you for that. I however, like Tom A., had lost a spouse and one day received a phone call from an old high school sweetheart. And after reviewing many of the endearments left by some of you in my Senior Yearbook about "Moe this" and "Moe that" and especially Randy Rottler 's ('68) advise to "Watch that Ryan kid. He's a gangster. You can tell by the way he walks." I decided to take all this under advisement and married Mike (Moe) Ryan anyway. We were wed in Jan., '06 in the Cayman Islands, at sunset, barefoot on the beach. We had finally come full circle after 35 years and life has never been so much fun! Right Honey? (He's looking over my shoulder as I type this...he just hunts and pecks)...He said "Yes, dear!" Good answer!

We live in Monticello on Lake Freeman, so hopefully we'll run into Marty someday soon. We work part time during the summer. I'm a Registered Nurse at White County Memorial in Monticello and Mike works at Long Electric in Lafayette. We too love to travel. So for the past three January's we pack up the SUV and drive 2300 miles (one way) to San Carlos, Mx., where we rent a home on the beach until it gets above 50 degrees in Indiana (sometime around Easter). Then Mike re-packs the SUV and we take a scenic route home. Buy this time I'm starting to really miss the grandkids.

I have a daughter Kelli (34) married to Matthew and they have two boys Hayden (5) and Hyat (3). They live in Monticello so we get to see them quite often. Mike's children are more spread so it's a little more difficult to visit. Daughter Lauren (26) lives in Chicago and is a Respiratory Therapist. Son Sean (21) lives in Orlando and attends the University of Central Florida and is majoring in IT Engineering. We all try to do Christmas.

Enough about us for now hopefully we can talk more in July. We put our heads together over dinner tonight and these are a few memories we came up with...in no particular order:
-Block section competitions during Sectionals against the Bronchos
-Fundraising Paper Drives on Saturdays or (The birth of Recycling)
-Decorating the Junior Christmas Parade Float at the Fairgrounds...all those Kleenex!
-Forging those absentee excuses from you parents so you could get back into class.
-Skipping Mr. Eberle's Government Class and having him catch you driving thru the Stadium Parking Lot later that day but allowing you back in class the next day with just a slight remark about "Everybody needing a day off sometimes" (What a teacher!)
-The winning smile of Sister Justina (Not!)
-Laurie Radnor's Freshmen party playing Spin the Bottle and pretending to get married (we did and who knew?)
-Mike, Lammers, Roach and Peters job at Owens Dairy at Main and Earl.
-Sue, Sandy, Jeannie and Mary Kevins trip to Owens Dairy during Halloween to purchase those "little white" Trick or Treats plus the OJ and puffed rice so we wouldn't look so suspicious! Our luck, none of the guys were working that night.
-Kevins Javelin sinking up to the axels in mud in a corn field across from the Conservation Club
-Frozen Custard Fruit Drink and the little old lady that would come out and take down our license plate numbers saying she was going to call the police (What was that all about anyway?)
-What do these locations have in common? The Wall, The Purdue Stadium Parking Lot, Bishops Woods and 350 South...I'll never tell!
-Double dating at the drive-in with John and Joanne
-Double dating with John Q. and Linda S. at the Putt Putt Golf Course followed by a trip to the country for a little bit of........ "Cow Tipping" Yes, the guys really tried this. It was hilarious! Every girls dream date.
-Ted Rothrock's New Years Eve Party Sr. year. The "Window Well Frig's" (Thus the first "Well Drinks")
-Bill Bogan and Jim O'Connor as a couple of chaperones for the guys during senior week (are you kidding me?)
-Would you believe two Novice Sisters dressed in lay cloths chaperoning 8 girls in a one bed, one bath cottage on Lake Freeman during the same senior week? How about Jeff guys just down the road and CC guys across the lake? Oh yeah life was good! (OMG if our parents only knew)
-FBLA weekend trip to Ball State (Sue, Lynn, Linda, Billy, Molly and Pat)
-Ellie Andrews party at the Lake
-Bass Weejuns for girls and Beefroll loafers for guys
-Circle Pins (aka Virgin Pins)
-Madris Shirts
-Fairy Loops
-Spencer Davis - "Gimme Some Lovin"
-Class Rings
-Angora Sweaters
-8 Track Tapes
-Kilt skirts

Hope to see many of you in July and a special thanks to the Reunion Committee for all your hard work and effo

Kevin,
Thanks for putting this online. It has been interesting. As for myself, I am and have been in Lafayette all along. I am married to Marilyn Beutel, class of 71, and have been for 35 years. We have two sons, Matt and Brad, both graduates of Central Catholic. They have both completed college, are married and we have two grandsons. Another Bobby Metzger, who is 3 and Joey is 1. we sold our business in 2003 and since then I have become a partner in Centaur Gaming. I drive back and forth to Indianapolis 5 days a week.Of all the horses I see run, seeing Rothrock as a priest is still the all time long shot for me. Over the past 40 years, the class of 69 has always been well represented at all C.C. functions so it has been easy to stay in touch with quite a few of our classmates. I did the public address for football and basketball at C.C. for 30 years. I suggested that they get some one younger to take over and Tom Arth took my place. He is two days younger.I am looking forward to seeing everyone in July, should be fun.

I haven't checked in for awhile. There have been many great additions since last I offered, so here goes:

SOB, (that would be Sue Onorato Blue, guys and gals)-a lot of good stuff! I too remember drivers ed. As I recall, the four students in the car were you, Penny Beaver, Cara Bishop and myself with Mr. Galt as instructor. Is it any wonder I have had about 20 accidents in my driving career? Who could have learned anything under those conditions?

Gary (Ace) Werst, Hey sorry we are going to miss you this year, but it doesn't mean we can't do it again sooner than the 50th.

Jane, Did anybody ever buy lunch in the cafeteria on any day other than pizza day?

Tom A And one hell of football team it was too. What was it? Won the last 7 games straight- including beating then No. 1 (in the state) Logansport.

Buuuuush,(or as my parents called you, Eddie Haskel - "Hello Mr. and Mrs. Wolford", then you fried my sister's goldfish). Actually, I'd better not get into all the things we did together-you never know who's reading this. But I do remember fishing the Tippy with you (up at Uncle Luther Schuster's place) Although I don't know if check the line, drink a few Buds, check the line, drink a few Buds would satisfy the serious angler as fishing.

Joanne,
The block section - outstanding. I still proudly tell people here on LI (where a couple of hundred people for a HS game is a good crowd) about the CC
block section that was over 200 strong- with a waiting list to get in.

Sue Ramey Ryan (hey, that's got a nice ring to it). What a memory! But you had help. Although I don't see Moe offering many of these. Did you, Mike?
I trust your memory, but what in the world was my Javelin doing in a corn field across from the conservation club? Never mind, I have a feeling I know. Good to hear from you guys.

Bob,I have been back to sporting events at CC and have heard both you and Tom do the PA. Nice jobs, both of you. Now if Tom's thinking about hanging up the mike, and the job needs to get 'younger yet', I am only 57 you know. I would seem to have the appropriate hairstyle for the job too.

And to all of you guys in Mr. LaRocca's 4th period Health class sophomore year. Who can forget the rat attack and the great white rat hunter, Dave Mills?

Until next time
Kevin

WOW what memories you guys have. Someboby should write a book. Sorry, I will not be able to attend the reunion. I think it is the first one I have missed. I will be back in Lafayette about two weeks after the gala affair for a niece's wedding and a family reunion. This will involve drinking a beer or two and I wish I could combine the trip with a little fishing with Bush on the river.

Thanks to all the people that are working so hard on this project. Hope to see all of you at the 50th.

forty years and forty nights wandering in the desert (not dessert, arth). i have wrestled with the devil (and she is sister kevin), and will soon be re-united with 69 lost souls from the barrenness (or is that baroness?). i tried to get married, but forgot the ring. i wanted to have children, but was the wrong sex. i couldn’t keep a job, because i didn’t know where to put it. i excel at abject failure, so don’t expect much, just mush.

but, what would you say if nothing were said? if the hours were not yours and the time spent wasn’t paid for in the first place. maybe just now you are reading this note, or hearing one that reminds you of catholic central. would it be the resounding tambour of classmates like cymbals clashing together, cutting air, marking time (no, that sound is heard only by the instruments themselves). perhaps the beat of a person on a beat - checking shop windows of transient emotions. no, it sounds like the tuning fork in the road of life which resonates to unheard-of frequencies. the song is never over as the waves are undiminished through time and space. if your grandchildren's grandchildren listen carefully, it's the lute of king david interwoven with the notes of our lifetime. do you know, "this is this"? could you hum a few bars?

if you think i speak in tongues, si, si - tongues for the memories!

Sure is fun and interesting reading the blog. Sorry to say I will not be able to make it to the reunion and see everyone in person.

After living my first 26 years of my life in Lafayette I graduate from Purdue in 1976 and departed Lafayette to go to work for a company in Phoenix which was then known as Sperry Flight System which is now known as Honeywell Aerospace. After 33 year I still am working for the same company, same department and position, Avionic Product Support Engineer. Even though I have worked for the same company and department for 33 years, I have called home in a number of different cities. 4 years in Dallas, 3 years in Hamburg, Germany, a year in Amsterdam, Holland, 13 years in Phoenix, 7 years in Tulsa, and the last 5 years back in Phoenix.

In 1982 when I was living in Europe I meet and married my wife Janet who is from London, England. She had two boys from a previous marriage and we had a daughter. The kids all have done well for themselves. The oldest lives in Columbus, Ohio and teaches high school Math. He is married and has two children. The second son lives in the Phoenix area and drives a truck for Coke a Cola and is also married but no kids. Our daughter graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2005 and works OMD in Chicago as media planner. We have not got her married off yet.

Of all the places I have live I like Phoenix the best. I enjoy the warn weather and sunshine and the 110 plus does not really bother me. The last time I was in Lafayette it was 5 below. I told my family that still lives in Indiana I will take a 110 any day over 5 below.

One of my memory as senior was a conversation I had with Bobby Kline and Don Schmitz and they were saying they could not wait to graduate and get out of Lafayette and I was saying I had no desire to leave Lafayette and expected to live my life in Lafayette. If it was not for the fact I was and still am an aviation junkie I would have more than likely stayed in Lafayette. I have had no regret moving from Lafayette or the career I pursue. It has been a good and interesting life.

Some of my fondness memories of high school was playing football and banging heads with Tom Arth during football practices. Playing football help me develop both physically and mentally and it help me gain a lot of self confidence. I believe I would have been far less successful in life had I not played football in high school.

After reading Ken Knevel blog log I think maybe some of those bell ring hit he took playing football have had long last effect on him. He seems to be a little out of it as I remember him in the huddle a couple of times.

Do you remember:
Johnny Chance at Pythian Home?
Father Fox's cottage?
Girl's gym suits?
Mrs. Reifenrath's sex education class?
Girl's sports? (none!)
Mass every day in grade school?
Sandi Fruits' parties?
Painting signs on the landing and Father Fox letting us listen to the juke box for free?
I would really like to hear from everyone as to what they have been doing the last 40 years!

Hi Gary, Thanks for asking. Tom and I sold our Lebanon business after 5 years of being open 24 hours a day and only closed on Christmas. Tom went back to 9 yrs of high school administration and retired then due to his Multiple Sclerosis.
Three of our kids were at Purdue at the time and all my family is still in Lafayette so we came back. So here we are for now!

Well Hello Everyone. How in the ---- did we use up 40 years of life. Wait! before I go on, is there a spell checker available?, and how does one comment on those years in just a few lines? This could be a lot of fun if we remember that our minds are still in our teens but just caught in an older body. But this blog is supposed to be about fond memeories, right Kevin. Oh yes, lets see, fond memories? So many good looking girls so little time. Oops, some times that young boy still gets loose. Yes, I am talking about all of you ladies. But on a more serious note, to all of you who have enjoyed a lasting relationship my congradulations
My road has been a bit rougher, with 2 divorces I thought all was lost until I met Tommie. We have been happily married for 14 years now, between us we have six children and 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren with 2 more grandchildren on the way this fall. We live in a modest home in Mt Healthy area of Cincinnati and enjoy gardening and travel. Which brings me to the subject of the reunion, We are going to Cancun the week after our reunion and I still don't know if we can make it. Tom, give me a call if you have time, I work nights so it is best to catch me around noon during the week. 513-851-7881. Anyone else that would like to say hay! Please give me a call also.
Ok that should take care of about 6 months of life. Guess I will have to comment more later. Still wish there was a spell checker available.!!!
Later everybody. David

I just about gave up on hearing from any St. Lawrence "kids"! Thank you Donna B, Mike F., Greg S. and David C. for writing! I missed seeing you all at the 8th grade class reunion a few years ago, but I'm happy to know you are alive and well!
David Clark: I live in Cincinnati too (in Anderson Township near Coney Island)!!
Mike: I'm going to Amsterdam for a week in August. What part of Amsterdam did you live in?
Donna B: For some reason I can't find your note on the blog, but I do remember reading it. Or was it an e-mail that was passed on? I must be suffering from Alzheimer's (or blindness).
And Teresa Doppelfeld: Where are you now? Your Christmas card was returned.

Donna Murphy

I lived in the town of Aalsmeer. The town sets just south of the Amsterdam airport and is the home of the Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer Flower Auction. Flowers from all over the world are sold there daily. If you are taking the flower tour it will be one of the highlights of the tour.

I didn’t know there was a St Lawrence class reunion!

Thanks for the info about the flower tour. My husband won a trip to Amsterdam through his office. We have a week to do whatever we want and the flower tour sounds like a good idea.

It’s been a month since my first post and I’ve enjoyed reading what others have had to say. I thought I’d add a few memories and comments of my own.

We had some pretty good teachers at CC. I’ll always remember Sister Viola, Phyllis Conrad Locard, Fr. Loner and Roger Priest. They all challenged and enlightened me. In Particular Sister Viola made a huge impact in my life. During our junior and senior years on Monday evenings from 7 till 9 we had a computer science class co-taught by Sister Vi and Mike Faulkner’s older brother, Jim. Besides myself I remember that Chuck Sanchelli, Mark Bir, and Anne Brickler took the class both years. The first year Jim tried to teach us assembly language (MAP for the ~1960 IBM 7094). That was an utter failure, so we moved on to FORTRAN IV. Paul Waterstraat and I spent many hours in the basement of the Math Building at Purdue trying to get our programs to work. I made enough progress so that Sister Vi and Mike recommended me for a job at PUCC (Purdue University Computer Center) then located in the bottom two floors of the Math Building. I started working there in May of 69 and stayed until July of 73. I learned an awful lot working there and I gained a terribly unfair advantage over most other Purdue students (in the days of batch processing) with the quick turn around time. This job also provided me with the income to pay my share of the rent at the apartment on South Grant Street next to the Purdue Power Plant that I shared with Chuck Anderson. In 71, Chuck moved out to be a live-in caretaker at St. Tom’s, and Pat McCarthy and George the wonder dog moved, but that’s too long a story. I also met and courted my first wife, Linda, while working at PUCC. I ran into Viola at a conference at Northern Illinois in 1992. She was teaching math at a community college south of Rockford close to Woodstock. She was close to retirement then. I hope she’s still alive and well.

This July also marks the 40’th anniversary of six rather naïve eighteen year old’s (George Wiese, Ken Knevel, Tom Arth, Rick Schmidt (may he rest in peace), Dave Halsmer and myself) who drove up to Chicago to watch the NY Jets play the College All Stars. By all rights we probably should not have survived! Trying to walk back to the Holiday Inn from Soldier’s Field after midnight on a Friday was not too bright. As I recall, George told his mom we had gone camping!

For a rather small group of people, we certainly had a large contingent of future pilots. Dave Halsmer (to be expected), Ken Knevel, Mike Faulkner, and Rick Schmidt. Are there any more?

A few directed comments:
To Donna Murphy Nagy: Does your brother Don still work in Plasma Physics at John Hopkins?

To Greg Sondgerath: I can never recall you being the least bit offensive. You were one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. By the way I still have the “orc head” incense burner you made.

To Ken Knevel: “Say hi, Al”.

To Al Lehnen: Don has a PhD in Physics and works for the Naval Research Lab in DC. The plasma part sounds right, but what do I know!! Much of what he does is classified, so he can't tell me a whole lot, and what he does say I don't understand anyway.
He and wife Sandy will soon be grandparents for the first time. Sandy has a PhD in Computer Science and works on internet security, while I have trouble using a blog correctly.

Wow! What roads we have all traveled in the last forty years. It has been such fun to read the life snipits of fellow classmates & old friends.
Kevin, twenty accidents??? I haven't had any, so my view of driver's ed is quite different than yours. I think you must have been too easily distracted sitting so close to three summer-tanned girls in a small sedan.
Kearney, thanks for the heads up on Johnny L. Too bad he's going to be a no show. Your '65 St. L. class reunion website was GRRRRRREAT! How come Lynne Steill looks exactly the same? Whatcha drinkin', Lynne? It's powerful, better bottle it! Actually, you all looked marvelous in the pictures! Good clean living & happy times!
Can't wait to see y'all in one week. I'm still trying to decide what to wear. Call me, Sandy Fruits, so we don't wear the same thing (just kidding) We used to do that before football games but for another reason; we tried to dress alike so we wouldn't stand out and be different.

Hello Everyone!! I've been late in adding to this site as I have been busy moving for the 16th time in 35 years!! Not military, just a husband who likes to change jobs. We are pretty settled in a house we've owned for 5 years in Freedom, NH but were using as a vacation/getaway place. Now we are here full time and hopefully permanently. How did you all get to be old enough to be grandparents already??? Jack and I have 2 adult daughters, Lindsey 27 who lives north of NYC and Jenn 31 who lives in Johannesburg, So Africa--no sons-in-law or grandchildren yet. Since we are so close to the reunion, I will save other news for then but I have enjoyed reading all the memories--so many of them are mine too. Am "Leavin' on a jet plane" tomorrow for Laughalot and look forward to seeing everyone Friday night. Safe travels to all!

Here is a blog from Bonnie Bice and Mary Lundstrom!

Bonnie and I are sitting here trying unsuccessfully to access the blog for the reunion. So, with time running out, we are just going to tell you:

Bonnie Bice Bardey - Living happily in Lavonia Georgia. Still speaking like a northerner. Son Christopher is marrying Tray Spencer in Kingston N.M., this Saturday. Christopher is in his final year of acquiring his MFA. Daughter Laura has been married three years this October. Steve and I have been married 38 years. I am involved in several local volunteer activities. The most recent being the Land Of Spirit Folk Life Play. (Mary forced me to do this).

Mary Elizabeth Lundstrom. - Living happily in Lavonia, Georgia. People here tell me I have a funny accent (Huh?). Retired at 45 with 20 plus years in the military. I moved here from Denver in 2005. I am slowly beoming more involved in my art. I also am involved the the Land Of Spirit Folk Life Play. This year I was in charge of the make-up crew. I have a home about seven miles outside of Lavonia on Lake Hartwell. Here's a news flash. If you remember, my Mom had her last child when we were in ith grade. Well, that son, John, and his wife Kathy just had TRIPLETS (they already have a 18 month old toddler)! I will be heading to California to help them for a couple of weeks directly after Chris' wedding.

So this is us. We will think of y'all while in New Mexico. Bonnie says that next time ask us first before setting a date. We will see y'all in 5 years at the 45th!

Mary

Thanks Kevin for putting this website together. I see some of the Lafayette group every now and then. I work at Purdue in IT Networks and Security - not what I would have said I would be doing 40 years ago but it suits me now. My husband and I will celebrate 39 years of marriage this August. He is retired from Eli Lilly now going on four years and not regretting a day of it. We have three sons, our oldest is 32 and lives in Indy works at the Fire Dept and St. Vincents. Our middle son will be leaving to teach in Korea the first of August and our youngest is living in New York city, Brooklyn area and still hunting a job. The two younger ones graduated from Purdue and Seth, our oldest graduated with an education degree from Marion College in Indy. No grandkids, no prospects since none of them is married or entertaining such prospects. So I have to adopt grandkids and have two nieces who share their little ones well.

Memories from CC
Father Vernon getting mad when some of the senior girls in their yellow cords "taped" go CC on their skirts. He sent them home for this major infraction.

Can't remember the nuns name but we nick named her Buckwheat - she was trying desperately to keep us safe and dating only fellow Catholics - invented some terrible story of the demise of some young girl getting with a protestant - told us this just before the summer vacation began.

MacBeth - to be precise 6 weeks of MacBeth with "video" of the three witches at their boiling pot.

St. Mary's: Sister Joan Mary holding her beads and sneaking into the room to catch us talking or whatever.

Mrs. Wagoner and Monday mornings when she would talk for two hours before we started any school.
The time we synchronized ruler dropping in her class - we were so bored - you could always get your homework done before you left school!

I really had a great time seeing everyone last Friday. My thanks and congratulations to Tom & Mary and everyone else who worked so hard to make the reunion a success. Several people inquired at the reunion if I knew anything more about about Viloa Knappke ("Sister Vi"). I got home Sunday night and looked through the information from the 1992 conference where I had run into her. Her name now is Vi Bangesser and she taught at Highland Community College in Freeport Illinois. As recently as the Fall of 2007 she taught a trig class there, but she is not currently listed as a full time faculty member. Her teaching still inspired people as evidenced in the testimonial at http://www.highland.edu/stories/story.asp?story_id=8 .

From searching the web I think she still lives in Freeport and even participated in the third round of the 2008 Illinois State Senior Women's Golf Championship. She also seems active at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in freeport (see http://www.stthomas-freeport.com/SCHEDULEFORAPRIL-JUNE2009.pdf )as she was a minister of communion last May. Unfortunately I could not find a current address online. The last address I had was 216 W Westwood Avenue, Freeport, Illinois, 61032.

Again it was great to see everyone!
Sincerely,
Al Lehnen

A big thank you goes out to all who had a hand in arranging the reunion. A great job by all! It was a lot of fun. I am only sorry the evening went by so fast and I am reflecting now on the many classmates with whom I did not get a chance to speak.

Here's a snapshot of my last 40 years. Left Laf. in '74 for Tampa. Married a fella who was a career student (at least that's what I thought at the time). He moved to Granada West Indies to attend medical school and I returned to Laf in '82 to help take care of my father. Husband finished med school in Miami but too much time apart had its affects on the marriage and we divorced in '84.

18 years pass with a good job at AE Staley working with Sue Ramey Ryan and my brother, Steve, and Linda Maddox. Good years.

Then one day in 2002 the Good Lord decided I was ready to meet my soul mate. A blind date in February set up by friends in Ft Myers resulted in a December marriage the same year. Russ is now a Director of Investments with Oppenheimer Wealth Mgmnt. He spent the last 15 years with Smith Barney - all here in Ft Myers. Previous to all of this, he was in the golf business. I have no children; he has two grown (Ryan and Katie, both in Ft Myers). No grandchildren. I am a loan officer with a privately held bank, Orion Bank.
As I read the blogs I am amazed at the memories....
I was so good to be with every one and I look forward to the next gathering.
